THE MAGIC OF SLEEP

Sleep is an activity that all humans do automatically and is often underestimated in regards to its healing potential. In fact, restorative sleep is the foundation of physical and mental health. Lack of adequate nighttime rest has been associated with dementia, high blood pressure, increased blood sugar levels, depression, increased cancer risk and obesity.


Sleep as therapy dates back to classical Greece where healing temples or “aesclepions” induced sleep in patients with chronic health conditions. One inscription found in Epidaurus speaks of a woman named Ambrosia who had her vision restored while asleep. In more recent times, physicians would send patients to countryside sanitariums for rest and good food. Unfortunately, with the rise of high-tech medicine and antibiotics, patients often prematurely resume their activities before they have received the full benefits of rest.


A brief look at the physiology of sleep may help us understand the importance of this subject. The brain consumes almost 20% of the total body oxygen consumption in an adult. The high metabolic activity of the brain and nervous system generates a high level of free radical waste products, the toxic effects of which require proper rest to combat and reverse.

Good nocturnal rest promotes the production of melatonin (a protective hormone), while lack of rest diminishes its production. Myelin, the protective layer of the nervous system, is also produced during an unconscious state. Science Magazine, in the October 18, 2013 issue reports further extraordinary health benefits of sleep: Dr. Maikan Nedergaard of the University of Rochester found that brain cells shrink during sleep, allowing the spinal fluid to wash out cellular debris, including beta-amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.


We all know that when ill with the flu, nature forces us to lie horizontally in order to preserve vitality so the body can fight the infection and self-heal. Well-known chiropractor and nutritionist , Dr. Bernard Jensen, advised patients who were not getting well to go to bed by sunset, as practiced in traditional societies.

Good “sleep hygiene” is necessary for everyone, especially the insomniac. A good regimen includes all of the following: daily sun exposure for 15-20 minutes, discontinuation of television and computers 1 hour before bedtime, a darkened bedroom with minimal electronic devices, warm baths in the evening, retiring the same time nightly, and avoidance of caffeine, alcohol and vigorous exercise before retiring. Individuals experiencing insomnia may need dietary and nutritional changes including blood sugar evaluation. Botanicals can be helpful in this regard as well as the use of melatonin as mentioned above. Chiropractic neurological methods such as Neurovascular Dynamics and Logan Basic can assist in producing the relaxation response necessary for restorative sleep.


Herbert Benson, M.D. summed it up as follows: “There can be no healing in the absence of relaxation.” Sleep fits that description. Today we know more about the science of this timeless remedy and why it works. It is the elixir we all need and is free to all of us on a daily basis.
